Law Enforcement

Chouteau County dispatchers dispatch for Chouteau County Sheriff's Deputies, and Fort Benton City Police Department for an area of 3,936 square miles and a population of 5,895. The county consists of the towns of Big Sandy, Carter, Fort Benton, Geraldine, Highwood, Loma, Square Butte, Knees, and Floweree, and all rural areas within Chouteau County. The main priority during an emergency is to monitor the safety and well-being of the first responder: deputies, police, fire, and EMS. Our county works with other outside agencies and our dispatchers will at times assist other Law Enforcement officers such as BLM (Bureau of Land Management), MHP (Montana Highway Patrol), P&P (Parole and Probation), and any other agency needing our assistance.

Fire and EMS

Our dispatchers serve as a lifeline to our callers before the responders can arrive on scene. All dispatchers are certified in EMD (Emergency Medical Dispatch) and CPR certified. EMD is lifesaving instructions given to our callers to walk them through medical emergencies while waiting for responders. This training covers, assaults, heart attacks, strokes, amputations, childbirth, CPR, drug overdose, and more. Two of our dispatchers are certified in EMHD (Emergency Mental Health Dispatch). What is EMHD? These dispatchers are trained to de-escalate callers with serious mental illness, boost their cooperation, and protect all those on scene. These dispatchers are trained to help prevent suicides and suicide-by-cop. Chouteau County dispatchers are responsible for the alerting and support of the county's eight fire departments: Fort Benton, Big Sandy, Geraldine, Carter, Loma, Knees, Highwood, and Elim. Three ambulance services, Fort Benton Memorial Ambulance, Big Sandy Ambulance, and Geraldine Ambulance. Five Quick Response Units; Carter, Highwood, Knees, Loma, and Elim. 

Search and Rescue~ SAR

Chouteau County dispatchers are responsible for alerting Search and Rescue~ SAR anytime they are needed in the county. SAR will be called out to assist on motor vehicle accidents, traffic control lost and or missing persons, river rescues, and anytime extra volunteers are needed in the county SAR is usually called out to assist.  

Emergency Notification System~ CodeRED

CodeRED is a web-based critical communication solution that enables local public safety personnel to notify residents and businesses by telephone, text message, email, and social media of time-sensitive information, emergencies, or urgent notifications. The system can reach hundreds of thousands of individuals in minutes to ensure information such as evacuation notices, missing persons, inclement weather advisories, and more are quickly shared. Only authorized officials have access to send alerts using the CodeRED system.
